Don't Let Dieting Impact Your Oral Health

Like many people who need to lose a few pounds, I try diet after diet in an attempt to find one that finally works for me. I learned the hard way that I need to make sure any diet will not harm my teeth, even if it does help me lose a few pounds. I learned this lesson when following a grapefruit diet. There are many versions of this, but the version I tried had me eat a grapefruit alone several times each day. It was supposed to suppress my appetite. I helped keep me from munching on unhealthy snacks, but the acid in the fruit took a toll on my tooth enamel and I quickly started getting lots of cavities. I created this blog to remind people that change up their diets often to make sure the foods they are eating are not harming their teeth.

3 Reasons Why You Should Take Your Children To See A Pediatric Dentist

Part of being a good parent is making sure your children have healthy teeth. You know brushing and flossing are important, but so is taking your children to see a pediatric dentist. This specialist can do many things for your children, such as:

Help Reduce Fear and Anxiety

For most children, fear and anxiety creep up once they realize they're going to the dentists. This is particularly true if your child has never been to the dentist before. Fortunately, pediatric dentists work with children every day and have helpful tactics that keep your children at ease throughout the entire visit.

When your child first walks in, they'll be greeted by a kid-friendly environment. Bright colors and unique decor help captivate your children's imagination. While waiting, there are plenty of child-friendly activities that make these visits fly right by.

Once the dentist finally introduces themselves to your child, they establish a rapport right away by using simple, friendly language.

Catch Early Warning Signs

As your child grows, their teeth and jaws constantly changing. Your dentist will make sure structures are growing appropriately, and can come up with corrective procedures if there are any abnormalities along the way. By catching these problems early, your child won't have to go through as many extensive procedures.

They'll also monitor potentially bad behaviors, such as thumb-sucking and heavy use of pacifiers. If there are any oral injuries present, your pediatric dentist will treat them on-site. Thanks to these preventative measures, your child will have strong teeth and can fight off gum disease.

Provide a Variety of Corrective Procedures

There are times when severe dental problems warrant help from a pediatric dentist. One of your child's baby teeth may need to be removed, for example. Teeth extractions can remove these teeth if deemed necessary so that permanent teeth grow correctly.

Fillings are also available if your child has cavities, which usually develop because of poor oral habits. Fillings today are often completed using a laser, as a opposed to a drill so that your child won't feel as much pain.

To keep your child's tooth enamel strong, fluoride treatments can be used. After one treatment, your child's teeth will be more resistant to acid attacks.

Your children can have healthy teeth and gums if you take a proactive role in their oral habits. This involves taking them to see a pediatric dentist, who can teach proper oral hygiene in a fun and effective manner.
